New DHS Rule Effective September 15, 2026
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced a new rule that changes how long J-1 Exchange Visitors are authorized to remain in the United States.
✈️ What's Changing?
Before September 15, 2026
- Your I-94 Arrival/Departure Record generally showed "D/S" (Duration of Status).
- You could remain in the U.S. for the length of your approved exchange program plus a 30-day grace period, provided your sponsor maintained your program.
Beginning September 15, 2026 (pending congressional review)
- Your I-94 will list a fixed departure deadline instead of "D/S."
- Your departure deadline will generally be your Program End Date + 30-Day Grace Period

📅 After Intrax Extends Your Program
- Your departure deadline will NOT automatically change.
- You must obtain additional authorization using one of the following options:
✅ Option 1: Apply for an Extension of Stay
(Recommended if Remaining in the U.S.)
File Form I-539 with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) before the departure deadline on your I-94.
